Smart specialisation defines priorities
The Smart Specialisation Strategy of Varsinais-Suomi 2026–2029 defines the sectors and themes in which the region is particularly competitive and where new innovations emerge. The strategy brings together the region’s research and development forces under five priorities.
Varsinais-Suomi is one of the world’s leading maritime industry regions, developing carbon-neutral shipbuilding, autonomous vessels and a sustainable maritime cluster. Innovations are created in collaboration with shipyards, design offices and technology companies.
The region is a food system innovator. Research and development focus on nutrient cycling, regenerative agriculture, healthy food products and food security. The aim is to combine security of supply, well-being and responsible production.
The Turku region is Finland’s strongest concentration of pharmaceutical development and health technology. Research and business activities produce new medicines, diagnostic solutions and well-being technologies that improve the quality of care and patient safety.
ICT, artificial intelligence and digital technologies are transforming industry and services in Varsinais-Suomi. Development work focuses on data, automation, cyber expertise and quantum technologies – as enablers of sustainable digitalisation.
The green transition and circular economy are the foundation for future growth. Varsinais-Suomi is developing hydrogen economy, bioeconomy and clean energy solutions that support both climate objectives and competitive business operations.
