The Varsinais-Suomi Regional Programme and partnership work have developed the region to be more sustainable. The range of development targets is extensive, and significant work has been done to achieve them. The cornerstones of sustainability work are the partnership networks and the municipalities of Varsinais-Suomi. The implementation of the Regional Programme’s objectives and the progress of sustainability work were assessed in the Regional Programme and Partnership Work Annual Review 2025 and in the report covering the entire programme period 2022–2025. Sustainability was evaluated from environmental, social, and economic perspectives.
The region has promoted green transition solutions, for example, by increasing the amount of renewable energy, developing circular economy ecosystems such as Lounaispuisto, and creating a climate roadmap. A monitoring system for the Archipelago Sea was developed to track agricultural nutrient loads, covering 61% of the Varsinais-Suomi catchment area in 2025. In addition, numerous new food products were developed in the region, for example, by utilizing lower-value fish. Sustainable transport was promoted by developing cycling routes and initiating discussions on regional commuter rail services.
The opportunity for different population groups to participate in regional activities has been promoted. For example, participatory engagement has been increased and digital skills have been supported. Immigrants have also been successfully integrated. Continuous learning has been supported in workplaces, and internship models between educational institutions and businesses have been strengthened. Decisions are communicated clearly, and open information is shared with residents. In addition, residents’ well-being was promoted by improving hiking routes and sports activities and developing cultural activities.
Experimental activities promoting innovation development have been expanded, and a regional RDI roadmap has been published. The region performed well in the national vitality barometer, and entrepreneurial spirit is strong. International visibility is being built here, for example, in expertise, projects, and for international companies. Life in the region is multi-locational and close to nature. Varsinais-Suomi is seen as an attractive option, which is reflected in population growth. Attractiveness is also enhanced by taking biodiversity into account, for example, in tourism and conservation measures.
Varsinais-Suomi aims to strengthen existing strengths during the next Regional Programme 2026–2029 and continue the region’s sustainable development. An important highlight is the region’s role as a builder of connections and Finland’s gateway to the West. Ambitious objectives require open dialogue on sustainability.
