Security in Europe is actively being built at the regional level as well. This theme brought together 47 regional authorities from Northern Europe in late January in Stockholm. This was a meeting of the CPMR, the Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe, where the Baltic Sea and North Sea Commissions convened for the first time in a joint meeting. These two key regional networks of Northern Europe came together to strengthen their cooperation around security, resilience, and sustainable growth. <\/p>\n

The timing could not have been more appropriate. The tightened security situation and hybrid threats elevate security of supply and critical infrastructure to an entirely new role. Social unrest, threats to democracy, and unpredictability related to the economy and stability also increase the need for preparedness, anticipation, and cooperation. <\/p>\n

Security Is Built in Everyday Life \u2013 Regions Have a Key Role<\/h2>\n

It is precisely in this context that regions have a decisive role; regions and municipalities are the closest link not only to citizens but also to critical infrastructure, and therefore play an absolutely essential role in preparedness. This was strongly evident in the Stockholm discussions as well; the role of regions was also recognized by EU and national actors. The seminar heard messages that resilience is not created through top-down direction, but at the local and regional level \u2013 where infrastructure is built, services are provided, and people live their daily lives. <\/p>\n

At the conclusion of the meeting and discussions, a joint political declaration was adopted \u2013 Reinforced Regional Cooperation in Northern Europe to increase Competitiveness, Resilience, Sustainability, and Security<\/em> \u2013 which emphasizes the shared responsibility and common opportunities of Northern European regions. The Baltic Sea and North Sea regions are hubs for European transport, energy, innovation, and the maritime economy. Ports, transport corridors, renewable energy solutions, and skilled labor form the backbone upon which both security and the green transition are built. <\/p>\n

Varsinais-Suomi as Part of the Northern Whole<\/h2>\n

From the perspective of Varsinais-Suomi, these themes are extremely familiar and important. We are a logistics hub, a significant maritime actor, and a strong developer of western connections. At the same time, the state of the Baltic Sea and especially the Archipelago Sea affects us concretely from both environmental and economic perspectives. <\/p>\n

The meeting clearly demonstrated that Northern European regions want to act in a unified and strategic manner. Cooperation with non-EU but key partners such as Norway and the United Kingdom was also seen as an essential part of the region’s security and energy system. <\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]\n
